Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of logging in the United States, exploring the evolution of the industry and its unique language. Beginning with the early days of American colonists who coined terms to describe the unfamiliar landscapes and practices, the author traces the development of logging from a unified trade to the emergence of specialized loggers with their own distinct jargon. The author highlights the ingenuity and adaptability of loggers who borrowed words from various sources, including Native American languages and railroad terminology, to create a rich and colorful vocabulary. This lexicon reflects the challenges and triumphs of working in the unforgiving environment of the forest, encompassing tools, techniques, and the camaraderie of logging camps. As the industry transitioned from traditional methods to more mechanized approaches, the author notes the gradual decline of this specialized language. This book serves as a valuable record of a disappearing vernacular, preserving the legacy of loggers and their contribution to American history. By capturing the essence of logging culture through its language, the author provides a deeper understanding of the human experience within this demanding and essential industry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Typed letter signed to "Dear Charles" from "Walter": 2pp. 8vo, Ardwall, 8 April 1981. Walter Jameson McCulloch (1906-1988), 14th of Ardwall, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, writes of his three-times-great-grandfather, "David McCulloch [1650-1724], the graffitist, was the chap who built this house and bust himself - and his son after him - in the process . . . and that is why there is nothing very antique here although the family has owned the place for quite a long time." He comments on archaeological matters and notes the death of "your old friend Jack Macfie. I met his widow at the christening of one of my grandchildren, A pleasant creature with, they tell me, a fair chance of becoming Lord (or, rather, Lady) Provost of Edinburgh one of these days." The Irish-born Councillor Mrs Macfie (née Kathleen Elizabeth Sarah Welsh, 1919-2003) didn't become Lady Provost but Lady Dunpark, after marrying, as her third husband, the judge Lord Dunpark, a neighbour in Heriot Row; she and her second (lawyer) husband bought 17 Heriot Row, Robert Louis Stevenson's family home, in 1971. Antony Charles Thomas (1928-2016), Lecturer in Archaeology at Edinburgh 1958-67, Professor of Archaeology at Leicester 1967-71, Professor of Cornish Studies at Exeter 1971-91, had earlier conducted excavations on Ardwall Island. "In 1957," noted his Guardian obituarist, Peter Fowler, "he was appointed lecturer in Stuart Piggott's department of archaeology at Edinburgh University. His excavation on Ardwall Island (1964-65) elucidated a long structural sequence from early Christian cemetery and chapel to late-18th-century tower; his study of Pictish symbols controversially concluded that many originated in earlier and contemporary material culture and were used to show kinship and social status.".
