Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Book is clean with a square, tight binding and bright, white pages. Book has minor wear on the edges that is difficult to see in the scans. The Triumph of 'A Damn Fool' Late in the summer of 1947, the presidents of all the Christian Brothers colleges in America convened in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Christian Brothers were an order within the Catholic Church devoted entirely to teaching, to bringing education to people who might not otherwise receive its benefits. The foremost Christian Brothers leader in Santa Fe was Brother Benildus, head of the long-established St. Michael's High School. He had just achieved the greatest victory of his career, winning permission from the federal government to start a full four-year college on the site of a former U.S. Army hospital, abandoned at the end of World War 11. Eagerly Benildus conducted his esteemed colleagues on a tour of the soon-to-be campus, which was to open for its first term in just weeks. But what met their eyes were vacant foundations, stripped-bare plumbing and electrical conduits, deteriorating military barracks, "temporary" structures assigned to house an administration building, a theater, a cafeteria, dormitories, classrooms, and chapels. All was in shambles! The president of Manhattan College in New York, one of the order's most prominent schools, worded his reaction carefully. He said that what Benildus was trying to accomplish on the high New Mexican desert was admirable indeed. Yet he felt compelled to add: "But you must be some damn fool if you think you can open and operate a college here!" On September 15, 1947, the new Santa Fe college opened its doors as scheduled.
