Lo spunto per questo volume è offerto dalla recente edizione del Principe allestita da Giorgio Inglese (Roma 1994), cui è subito seguita l'editio minor commentata (Torino 1995). Argomentando e controdeducendo rispetto ad esse, in un fitto dialogo a distanza, Mario Martelli propone nel presente Saggio una innovativa chiave di lettura del capolavoro machiavelliano e, di conseguenza, una, per molti aspetti inedita, interpretazione generale della sua personalità. La capillare, minuziosa, agguerrita analisi dell'opera in questione conduce l'autore a ribadire la sua tesi, che ormai da tempo egli sostiene, ma che qui per la prima volta dimostra organicamente con eccezionale abbondanza di argomenti e con vasta concretezza di prove: I) il Principe approdato alla stampa, quasi cinque anni dopo la morte di Machiavelli, avvenuta nel 1527, non poté mai godere dell'ultima, necessaria revisione da parte del suo autore; ad andare sotto i torchi fu quindi una redazione provvisoria, una prima stesura ancora bisognosa di molte cure, per potersi degnamente presentare al pubblico; 2) tale stesura dovette avvenire nella seconda metà del 1513, con occasionali riprese (aggiunte ai singoli capitoli, inserimento di capitoli nuovi, innovazioni strutturali) fino al '16, se non addirittura al '18; 3) tutte le copie del Principe derivano da una sola copia, redatta, con ogni probabilità nell'ambiente di Biagio Buonaccorsi, amico e collega di Machiavelli, già viziata da errori di trascrizione e da interventi più o meno arbitrari dei copisti; 4) il Principe non fu un trattato teorico ma un manuale, teso ad approntare per un monarca regole concrete onde acquistare e conservare uno Stato. Uno studio di singolare compattezza e forza documentativi, di fondamentale importanza per l'allestimento del testo con cui assumere il capolavoro «Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Niccolò Machiavelli».
