Van Manen says, At first, working in Ireland I wasn t sure what I was looking for. My husband had died. I dispensed with the people and reflected on the atmosphere. I was guided by a feeling and a search, a longing for some kind of meaning in a place of myths and legends. There was mystery and endlessness at the edge of a land beyond which is nothing but a vast expanse. \n\nWhere can it be found again,\nAn elswhere world, beyond\nMaps and atlases,\nWhere all is woven into\nAnd of itself, like a nest\nOf crosshatched grass blades?\nSeamus Heaney\n\nVan Manen rolled into photography almost by accident, taking pictures of her children with an old camera. As her work became more public she was soon drafted into the world of fashion photography. In 1977 she tired of the industry, and on discovering the documentary photography of Robert Frank and Josef Koudelka, van Manen began to explore the developing relationship between herself and her subjects, keeping a closeness and developing a personal, organic style of photography. Van Manen s images are defined by a fierce intimacy with her subject, as the viewer teeters on the edge of the frame, perpetually trespassing on private moments: rollicking children practicing handstands on the couch; a kneeling daughter combing the hair of her grandmother.\n\nVan Manen first visited the region in 1985, to the Appalachian areas of Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, returning periodically up until 2013 to visit mining families with whom she lived: the Boggs family with their ten red-haired sons; miners Mavis and Junior. The intergenerational images subtly trace the insidious changes undergone by Appalachia the slow and steady demise of the mining industry, and the migration of inhabitants from ramshackle wooden cabins to the city, or urban trailer parks. Hardcover without dustjacket (as issued). With an essay by Juri Andruchowytsch. 144 pages, 72 colour plates. 170 x 220 mm. From 2002 through 2005, Bertien van Manen visited families all over Europe to take pictures of their private photographs. In doing so she collected traces of people s lives, of happiness and sadness, of war and suppression, and she encompassed a century of history, across differences in culture and the meeting of human minds and hearts. Van Manen took photographs of photos from family albums, of photos hanging on walls, and of photos simply present in people s lives. With the advances of digital or mobile-phone camera technology, this means of keeping private photos and retaining memories and histories is slowly disappearing. From 1990 Bertien van Manen travelled through the former Soviet Union to take photographs of people and families. The resulting book A Hundred Summers, a Hundred Winters was published in 1994. In 1997 she started a similar project in China. East Wind West Wind was then published in 2001. Van Manen received several prizes and awards, including a nomination for the City Bank Photography Prize in 2003.
