It is the 14th of his Waverley novels which, for nearly a century, were the most-read novels in Europe. The Pirate was first published in 1822. It surrounds the life…of the Scottish pirate John Gow, who was executed for his many crimes in 1725. These books are part of an incomplete set I have, which is also listed here. Between 1892 and 1894, the Boston publisher Estes and Lauriat published the collected Waverley novels. In 48 volumes, they published a leather set, a marbled-cover set and a plain set. I have volumes of the plain set. By 'plain', I mean attractive navy blue boards with ivory title plates on the spine. The publisher has stated 'Large Paper'; the paper is thick and of best quality. There were 1000 copies of this set printed. This is set #679. That is stamped on each book in red. There is red type on the title page and on the tissue paper fronting each illustration. Each book has six black and white illustrations. The illustrations in these two books are covered with tissue paper. They are stated as original etchings by Henry Robertson (English 1839-1921), Charles Holmes (English 1868-1936), Henry William Batley (English 1837-1907), Henry Macbeth-Raeburn (Scottish 1860-1947), Herbert Dicksee (English 1862-1942), William Strang (Scottish 1859-1921), and Francis Walker (Irish 1848-1916). In both cases, the title panels are faded and scratched. Volume II has minor spots on covers. Volume I's covers are perfect. Both books have fully-intact gold trim; only the tops of the pages were originally trimmed. In the case of both books, the interiors are perfect. No foxing. They have definitely not been read, or possibly even opened. Boun…d in original publisher's original green cloth, gilt, with signatures A-H having all pages numbered. A Very Good copy with some wear to its extremities and boards, and one inner hinge starting to crack. This INSCRIBED COPY, bearing the author's "Yours Faithfully/ Thomas Hardy" signed to the title page, has the same first print run pagination as all of Hardy's other recorded presentation copies of JUDE. Opposite Hardy's inscription, in a different hand, is the first owner's full name and address -- a local farm in West Meon, Sussex, quite near Winchester, the capitol of Hardy's Upper Wessex -- where Tess Durbeyfield was imprisoned and executed). JUDE THE OBSCURE, often cited as Hardy's most important novel, has an iconic status in the history of English literature, the bridge which links the Victorian Era and the Modern Era. Perhaps due to initially savage critical reviews, Hardy appears to have avoided signing copies of JUDE THE OBSCURE. This being only the third one we've seen since the auction of H. Bradley Martin's world class Hardy collection at Sotheby's New York in May 1990. One of Hardy's recorded presentation copies of JUDE to the Duchess of Abercorn (1848-1929) was sold by us for $60,000 in 2009 (admittedly still retaining its dust jacket which is not true in this case or most cases.) Published as Vol. VIII in Osgood's 'Wessex Novels', the first uniform and complete edition of Hardy's works which had commenced publication the year before. 'The edition is an important one. The text of every novel was thoroughly and carefully revised, the topography (names and distances) corrected where necessary, chapters frequently retitled, and much rewriting done. In addition Hardy prepared a special preface for each volume' (Richard L. Purdy: Thomas Hardy: A Bibliographical Study, p.281). Each of the sixteen volumes has an etched frontispiece by Macbeth-Raeburn depicting a scene from the novel drawn "on the spot" (in this case Christminster) and a map of Wessex drawn by Hardy himself. Copies of this work exist in a "mixed state", a decision having been made after initial production to drop the page number from the last page of each chapter; thus, the signatures within the book vary according to format. In this copy, the last page of each chapters is not numbered in gatherings A through D, but are so numbered in gatherings E through H, K, S, 2F and partially in 2H. In most copies, as here, the signatures vary slightly, presumably as later sheets were gradually altered to conform to the latter part of the book (ref: Purdy).

A mezzotint is a print made from an engraved copper or steel plate, the surface of which has been scraped and polished to give areas of shade and light respectively. Clear dark imprint with facsimile signature of Winston Churchill at the base. This mezzotint has been inspected carefully…under a loupe and is in excellent original and authentic condition. It measures 64.5 cm x 41 cm within the indent. The sheet size is 55.5 cm x 75 cm. The sheet is loose and not stuck down on card. Loosely attached to a very attractive white mount with gilt border. In an excellent solid wooden frame with gilt inner border, the frame measuring 68.5 cm x 91 cm x 3 cm. Macbeth-Raeburn was an experienced and accomplished printmaker and a member of the Royal Academy. He prepared the mezzotint copper plate in 1940 soon after Winston Churchill became prime minister, and this deeply evocative image has the man posing in front of the door of No. 10 Downing Street with a cigar and cane in one hand and his hat and gloves in the other. He is at the height of his power, about to fulfill his destiny and change history for the better. Apparently the artist planned to publish a run but did not do so. This would have been difficult during the war years, and Macbeth-Raeburn died in 1947 , only two years after the war ended. Rare proof copies were made, in 1947 and in 1951. This unsigned and unnumbered print is one of those earlier proof copies. Later, in 2000, Peter Harrington of London published a numbered limited edition of 250 mezzotints, which are now sold out. Will only be sent overseas at cost by express courier, which will incur an extra charge. You are welcome to enquire for a quote. Please note that I can only send the frame without the glass, in order to protect the mezzotint, or I can send the mezzotint in a roll without the frame, which will be cheaper.
