The crew has just sunk an enemy freighter, but instead of escaping cleanly, they find themselves trapped between two destroyers racing in to retaliate. This is the "mousetrap": the Pollack is exposed on the surface with hostile ships closing from both sides. The submarine fires two stern torpedoes in a desperate attempt to break free, but both shots miss. The destroyers immediately open fire. A searchlight suddenly locks onto the Pollack, flooding the bridge with blinding white light and stripping away any hope of concealment. The crew has no choice but to execute the most dangerous maneuver available to them: a full-speed crash dive. Lauded by the Indianapolis Times as "One of the best war books of the decade."
