This book collects essays on writings by erudite travellers who explored the Mediterranean countries in search of classical antiquities between the 17th and the 19th centuries, but encountered the art of the Middle Ages, nearly always unexpectedly. The analysis of this literature allows to evaluate the diverse perceptions of medieval heritage, particularly in Southern Italy and the lands of modern-day Croatia and Greece - considered prime destinations for the on-site study of Antiquity besides Rome. The texts are scrutinised from the perspective of the vocabulary employed by the authors, so to evaluate the interpretative categories they adopted in the examination and classification of the art and architecture from the Middle Ages, before history of medieval art was developed as an academic discipline during the 19th century. Proceedings of a conference held at the Universitaa di Napoli Federico II, Naples, Italy, November 20-21, 2023. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. With this book, the Hungarian Academy of Rome offers to the medievalist community a thematic synthesis about Hungarian medieval art, reconstructing, in a European perspective, more than four hundred years of artistic production in a country located right at the heart of Europe. The book presents an up-to-date view from the Romanesque through Late Gothic up to the beginning of the Renaissance, with an emphasis on the artistic relations that evolved between Hungary and other European territories, such as the Capetian Kingdom, the Italian Peninsula and the German Empire. Situated at the meeting point between the Mediterranean regions, the lands ruled by the courts of Europe west of the Alps and the territories of the Byzantine (later Ottoman) Empire, Hungary boasts an artistic heritage that is one of the most original features of our common European past. The book, whose editors and authors are among today's foremost experts in medieval art history, is divided into four thematic sections - the sources and art historiography of the medieval period, the boundary between history, art history and archaeology, church architecture and decorations, religious cults and symbols of the power -, with a selection of essays on the main works of Hungarian medieval art held in museums and public collections. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

If there is one constant in the history of Christianity and especially of the Western Church, it is its deep desire to be connected with its own past. From the perspective of the longue durée, it might even be possible to state that a meditation on Christian origins was a common and widespread response used throughout history in the face of each great moment of crisis within the Church. In those situations, the rhetoric produced by the Church was always aimed at emphasizing a desire to return to these mythical roots, the ideal community, a pure and radical Christianity. The question underlying this book is the way in which this desire for the past provides the occasion to re-live, re-think and re-create Christian origins. More precisely, the crux of our work is to understand how this desire can transform and rewrite the past both in materiality with restorations of ancient monuments and in ideas writing history. In this book, the main focus of attention is dedicated to three key moments, corresponding more or less to three crucial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church in the modern era. The first of these three is the Reformation and subsequent Counter-Reformation, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Second comes the moment in which the Catholic Church lost its temporal power during the Unification of Italy and the "spiritual" reaction culminating with the First Vatican Council (1869-1870). Lastly is the period before and after the Second.
