The story is taken from the German reminiscences of Heinrich Lienhard, who associated with and worked for Captain Sutter between 1846 and 1849. The translation was done by students of the German 4 class. The Modern Literature 8 class carefully edited the translation and read proof. Students in the Art Department drew and cut the linoleum frontispiece of Captain Sutter. The printing students set the entire book by hand, ran off the forms, and hand-sewed and bound the books. C. K. McClatchy Senior High School is happy to present you with this copy of I Knew Sutter." Back colophon: "Of This Edition 285 Copies Have Been Printed and Bound For Private Distribution, This Copy is No. 200." Issued in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Sutter's founding of his settlement "New Helvetia" which became the city of Sacramento. This book contains a translation of Chapter Ten from Heinrich Lienhard's "Californien unmittelbar" which was first published in 1898. The chapter is concerned with John Sutter and his fort. In the back of the volume is a listing of all the students who assisted in the production of the book.
