Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition hardcover in rust paper covered boards with bright gilt spine title. Spine ends bumped, tips still sharp. Non-authorial gift dedication on fep, ink remainder mark at foot of page block, else fine. 251 page text shows no soil or tears. Original, unclipped dust wrapper has a lightly sunned backstrip that extends around to both gutters, displays well in new protective mylar. Profusely illustrated including approx 200 drawings and paintings by Edith Somerville, and photos taken from the family archives, this volume provides a rich visual survey of the quirky, romantic, ebullient world of the Anglo-Irish. Edith OEnone Somerville and Martin Ross were two extraordinary women. Cousins and products of the Irish ascendancy world, they reacted both favorably and unfavorably towards their environment to present in their books a deceptively indulgent view of the Irish and English together, an 'unstable broth' of Anglo-Irish. The reality of their lives was somewhat different. Each was gifted, but it was only in collaboration that they would fulfill their true potential. When Martin Ross died in 1915, their profound, sisterly love survived the grave, and Edith continued - through spiritual communication - to see herself as collaborating with her dead cousin, whose name she never ceased to add to the title pages of her books (until very late in her writing career). As well as examining this extraordinary and touching story of selfless attachment, the book provides a vivid picture of the two women's often surprising reactions to Irish Home Rule and presents in particular Edith Somerville in the fascinating alternative guises of Master of Fox Hounds (The West Carbery Foxhounds), spiritualist, gifted artist and practical feminist. Below we see Edith on her favorite, the dappled gray mare, Bridget, and Martin riding 'Confidence', prior to her fall off 'Dervish' while hunting. She suffered prolonged bouts of invalidism after this accident in November 1898. Below that is Edith painting out-of-doors.
