No Binding. Condition: Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. No date, circa 1808 (dated 1808 at end of pamphlet). 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Ten pages, complete. Pages are intact overall but have some chipping along edges, browning, and spots of discoloration. A Good copy. This pamphlet contains an ardent plea in the form of a essay co-authored by members of Pennsylvania's Committee of Correspondence, namely, Michael Leib, John Dorsey, James Engle, Michael Bright, Robert McMullen, Thomas Leiper, and William Duane. The main subject of the essay is the upcoming 1808 presidential election. The Committee addresses several ongoing contentions in Pennsylvania regarding the upcoming election and the "Lancaster Convention." There have apparently been various smear campaigns against politicians the Committee supports. In response to this, the Committee makes an appeal to Pennsylvania citizens to not be deceived by baseless propaganda. The Committee summarizes that the "basis of our government [is] the disinterested sacrifice of individual interests for the preservation of those of the whole people." They ask that Pennsylvania citizens abide by this principle wherein the few do not overrule the many. The Committee references many people and events relating to the 1808 presidential election. For example, the Committee comes to the defense of Simon Snyder and acknowledges its unanimous vote for him as the 3rd Governor of Pennsylvania. They also come to the defense of Pennsylvania elector William Montgomery. The Committee reprints allegations from their opponents who had claimed that Montgomery, Samuel Maclay, and other electors acted in a subversive manner regarding the nomination of James Madison as the Democratic-Republican presidential candidate and instead nominated George Clinton as president and James Monroe as vice president. The Committee pointedly counters that no such discussion of Madison, Clinton, or Monroe ever happened at the Lancaster Convention. The Committee also clarifies that it accepts and supports the nomination of Madison. This pamphlet overall is a defense of the Committee's interests and its political allies such as Clinton, Montgomery, and Monroe.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the tumultuous history of the Mormons, officially known as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, during the mid-19th century. It unveils the story of their persecution and displacement, focusing on their exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois, and their arduous journey westward. The narrative unfolds through a collection of primary source documents, including letters, reports, and diary entries, offering a firsthand account of the challenges faced by the Mormons as they sought refuge in the American West. Central to the book is the role of Thomas Leiper Kane, a prominent figure who championed the Mormon cause and played a crucial role in mediating conflicts between the Mormons and the U.S. government. His writings provide valuable insights into the complexities of Mormon history, shedding light on their resilience, faith, and quest for religious freedom. Through vivid descriptions of Nauvoo's abandoned streets and the Mormons' makeshift camps, the book paints a poignant picture of their struggles and determination. The documents also reveal the political and social tensions surrounding the Mormons, highlighting the prejudice and violence they endured. Ultimately, this book offers a profound exploration of a significant chapter in American history, underscoring the importance of religious tolerance and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
