After receiving a Ph.D., he worked briefly as a rare book dealer and assistant curator at the Gutenberg Museum before moving to the United States. He was the author of several books on bookmaking, including The Life of the Book: How the Book is Written, Published, Printed, Sold and Read (1975). This book on woodcuts was written to address the relative lack of attention paid to this graphic art compared to engravings and etching. Emphasis on Dutch and German artists. First printing of the Third Edition (which could also be considered as the first printing of first edition with the present title since the original edition was "Fifty Books." and the Second Edition was "Seventy-Five Books." The later editions owe .their existence to the first edition which was written as a catalog for an exhibit at Columbia in 1933. About 82 unnumbered pages. Our copy is INSCRIBED by the author to Miss Alice M. Bourrell on the front free end paper, dated "Nov. 4, 1949." Our copy has some staining at the top of the front and rear covers with a trickle of stain running down the inside front cover and the front free end paper. There is some wear at the spine ends and the pages are somewhat yellowed with age.
