One of its Flights was equipped with de Havilland s modern wonder, the Mosquito, and among its pilots was twenty-oneyear- old Finn Eriksrud. Mosquito Attack! A Norwegian RAF Pilot at War charts his escape from occupied Norway, his travels across the world, his bomber training in Canada, and the reconnaissance and patrol missions he flew over his homeland. By December 1943, all of the original pilots of Finn s squadron had died, either in flying accidents or shot down around the Scandinavian Peninsula. That winter, Finn would himself be forced to bail out over the coast of Norway. He was captured and later imprisoned by the German Luftwaffe in Lower Silesia, and spent the rest of the war as a POW in Stalag Luft III Bellaria. In spite of thoughts of escape, Finn was only able leave the camp when the Germans abandoned it in early 1945. Tor Idar Larsen s narrative is a compelling and well-researched interpretation of Finn Eriksrud s original memoirs, written upon his return to Norway after the war. Light shelf wear on edges of dw/boards, sticker remnants bottom left of front dw; a near fine copy. 9 April 1940: Finn Thorsager was the first Norwegian flier to open fire on invading German forces. He was credited with shooting down an enemy aircraft in a Gloster Gladiator biplane that dark morning, and made Norwegian history. Thorsager escaped the Nazi occupation, and fled Norway in the autumn of 1940. He travelled through Sweden, the Soviet Union, Japan, USA, and finally arrived at 'Little Norway', a training camp in Canada. After a time as an instructor, Thorsager was transferred to England where he joined 331 Squadron flying Hawker Hurricanes and then sister squadron, 332, iflying Spitfires. Thorsager became a major and squadron leader in 1943. In 1944, he relocated to St. Andrews, flying as a Lodestar captain on a dangerous civilian route between Scotland and Sweden. Thorsager survived the war, and stayed in the air as an airline captain until his retirement in 1976.

On December 14, 1911, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team became the first human beings to reach the South Pole, just five weeks before Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova expedition arrived. Amundsen had already led the first expedition to traverse the Northwest Passage, and would go on to lead the first successful attempt to cross the Arctic by air (perhaps even becoming the first to truly reach the North Pole, according to some expert interpretations). Yet his personal life was complex to say the least, with a string of mistresses (including Eskimo women he brought back to Norway) and a poisonous relationship with his brother. He disappeared in 1928 while taking part in an airborne rescue mission in the Arctic; his body was never found.
