Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm, "Pop Series" vinyl record, Reprise F-2015, not specifying either mono or stereo (and therefore probably mono), near-mint vinyl in a good cardboard jacket with a strip of "Magic" tape to bottom edge, the top edge split 2/3rds of the way back, and a sticker to jacket front reading "Promotion -- Not For Sale," which warning is also repeated to the white record labels. Sinatra performs "Old Devil Moon" and "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" (both arranged by Nelson Riddle), Bing Crosby and Debbie Reynolds offer "Something Sort of Grandish," Rosemary Clooney delivers "Look to the Rainbow" and "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?", etc. Musical direction by Morris Stoloff, who also directs the orchestra. "Words by E.Y. ('Yip') Harburg and Music by Barton Lane," but "All Selections are DeSylva, Brown & Henderson ASCAP." (?) "Recorded at RCA Victor" and the labels say "reprise:" but also "Warner Bros. Records, Inc." Being a Reprise product, the whole shebang was, of course, "conceived and produced by Frank Sinatra." It appears this was one of four similar "repertory" products based on hit Broadway musicals of the late 1940s and offered as a mail-order box set in 1963, then released individually in 1964. This "Promotional" LP now reduced from $22.

A filmmaker with a diverse background in music, drama and television, Hill proved to be a popular storyteller in a variety of genres. His films are tied to important American themes and reflect an ironic, bittersweet vision of life. The book begins with a discussion of the way Hill's films often make their most important statements on the subtextual level. The stories entertain, but the subtext is often disturbing, contradictory, unresolved. Hill felt that all of his major characters create an environment, a fantasy, an illusion, and then go on to make it happen. It continues by tracing the thematic characteristics that are consistent with Hill's depiction of protagonists who create their own environments and then attempt to inhabit them. Then, individual chapters study in detail the art, craft and style of each of his films, including Period of Adjustment, Toys in the Attic, The World of Henry Orient, Hawaii, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Slaughterhouse Five, The Great Waldo Pepper, Slap Shot, A Little Romance, The World According to Garp, The Little Drummer Girl, Funny Farm, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting" ; Andrew Horton is the Jeanne H. Smith Professor of Film and Video Studies at the University of Oklahoma. He is an award-winning screenwriter who has written for American, Greek, New Zealand, Russian, Hungarian, and Norwegian productions. ; "As I get older, I get more didactic. I say what I really think. I don't hide ideas like Easter eggs for people to find. Now, if I have an idea, when something becomes clear to me, I don't embed it in a novel; I simply write it out in an essay as clearly as I can?"--George Roy Hill ; photos of Robin Williams, Paul Newman, Jane Fonda, Jim Hutton, Tony Franciosa, Dean Martin, Yvette Mimieux, Geraldine Page, Peter Sellers, Tippy Walker Marie Spaeth, Max von Sydow, Julie Andrews, Robert Redford, Michael Sacks, Michael Ontkean, Laurence Olivier, Diane Lane, Thelonius Bernard, John Lithgow, Glenn Close, Mary Beth Hurt ; FINE/VG.
