It translates and adapts analytical techniques developed for microwave antennas at reduced distances to the measurement of electroacoustic transducers. The theory is formulated in scattering-matrix form, emphasizing the use of plane wave spectra for the representation of sound fields, providing a suitable approach for solving problems involving interactions at arbitrary distances. One novel technique utilizes deconvolution of planar scanning data, taken with a known transducer at distances much less than the Rayleigh distance. This provides a means of obtaining complete effective directivity functions, corrected for the effects of the measuring transducer. The applicability of a (two-dimensional, spatial) sampling theorem and the fast Fourier transform algorithm, which greatly facilitate the necessary computations, is also demonstrated. Another technique extrapolates the received signal as a function of distance and provides a means of obtaining on-axis values of effective directivity observed at distances less than the Rayleigh distance. This book rigorously utilizes observed output of non-ideal (but linear) measuring transducers, making it a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the field of electroacoustics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
