One novel technique utilizes deconvolution of planar scanning data, taken with a known transducer at distances much less than the Rayleigh distance. The applicability of a (two-dimensional, spatial) sampling theorem and the fast Fourier transform algorithm, which greatly facilitate the necessary computations, is also demonstrated. Another technique extrapolates the received signal as a function of distance and provides a means of obtaining on-axis values of effective directivity observed at distances less than the Rayleigh distance.
