Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Assumed First Addition. 227 Pages Indexed. The English Opening is one of the most popular of modem openings. It is hard to imagine today a national or international tournament in which this opening does not occur. The diversity of strategic ideas, the unusual flexibility of its set-ups, and the complex manoeuvring struggle make it attractive to many grandmasters and masters. The move 1 c4 first began to occur in tournament play in the second half of the last century in games by English players, in particular Howard Staunton, from which it received its name. A contribution to the development of this opening was made by many outstanding players from the past, such as Zukertort, Nimzowitsch, Rubinstein, Reti, Capablanca and Alekhine. Then the popularity of the English Opening declined. But the deep development of openings such as the Nirnzo-Indian and Griinfeld Defences, in which Black began achieving good results, forced players choosing the closed games with White to seek new paths. And once again this old opening came to the forefront, allowing White to avoid the defences mentioned. Thus the move 1 c4! again became topical. A great contribution to the development of new paths in the English Opening was made by the outstanding Soviet player Botvinnik. In recent years it has been a major weapon of Smyslov, Polugayevsky, Larsen, Petrosian, Tal, Portisch, Spas sky, Karpov, Korchnoi, Uhlmann, Ljubojevic, Andersson, Miles, Hort, Hubner, and many others. It has also been employed by World Champion Garry Kasparov. There is essentially not a single modem grandmaster who has not included the English Opening in his opening repertoire either as White or as Black. Many authors have made a study of the English Opening, and the Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings, which first appeared in 1979, united their efforts. But, as usual, opening theory has not stood still. Hundreds, even thousands of games have been played, changing the evaluations of older variations and analyses. And the need for a new work has arisen.
