Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. Amsterdam: North-Holland, 1960-1979, the first 10 years, MISSING VOLUME V. Near fine first editions in very good unclipped dust jackets. Copies of Alfred O. Neir with his stamp and the label: "Property of Upper Atmosphere Physics Group Purchased with funds from NASA NsG-286-63 (0641-5554). The editor, Hildegard Korf Kallmann-Bijl, was the first chair of COSPAR, and "one of the most active pioneers in her examination of the physics of high atmosphere for the flight calculations of satellites."To the surprise of many, the USSR launched Sputnik 1 as the first artificial Earth satellite on 4 October 1957, heralding the opening of the Space Age. The following year, International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) established the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). COSPAR?s first Space Science Symposium was organized in Nice in January 1960. The first 10 years of Space Research featured pioneering work and scientific exchange. COSPAR's mission was to foster cooperation between space scientists of all countries in conjunction with the International Geophysical Year (IGY), July 1957 to December 1958, which was conducted to study the earth and its environment. Sixty-seven countries participated in IGY projects. It encompassed 14 Earth Science fields The IGY established the World Data Center system that is still in place today and is the forerunner and foundation of Climate Change research. 2025 marks the 40th year of the Space Research Symposium. COPIES OF: Alfred Otto Carl Nier (1911-1994) who pioneered the development of mass spectrometry. He was the first to use mass spectrometry to isolate uranium-235 used to demonstrate that 235U could undergo fission. From 1943 to 1945, he worked with the Manhattan Project. Most of the spectrographs used for monitoring uranium separations were designed by Nier. After the war, he returned to Minnesota where he worked on geochronology, the upper atmosphere, space science and noble gases, designing the miniature mass spectrometers used by the Viking Landers to sample the atmosphere of Mars.
