Dem haben renommierte Historiker wie Götz Aly, Patrick Bahners, Wolfgang Benz, Ulrich Herbert, Martin Kitchen, Otto Dov Kulka, Wolfgang Schieder und Hayden White widersprochen. Weltweites Aufsehen erregte vor allem der Londoner Gelehrte Jeremy Adler mit seiner Kritik und These, 'das absolut Böse' lasse sich nicht 'edieren'. In zwei Essays der Süddeutschen Zeitung und in vielen Radio-Interviews begründete er, warum die IfZ-Edition den Anforderungen einer seriösen Ausgabe nicht genügt. Adler wirft ihr vor, die antisemitischen Aussagen des Originals ungenügend zu kommentieren und somit die Judenfeindlichkeit von Mein Kampf zu bekräftigen.Ein Beispiel mag es verdeutlichen. In Hitlers Buch heißt es, 'der Jude [war] niemals im Besitze einer eigenen Kultur'. Die Editoren der IfZ-Ausgabe bestätigen Hitlers Auffassung, indem sie es als 'selbstverständlich' bezeichnen, 'dass [die Juden] sich der Kultur ihrer jeweiligen Heimatländer anpassten'. Damit ignorieren sie aber die Besonderheiten der jüdischen Kultur, zu denen Religion, Gebete, Gesetze, Bräuche, Rituale, soziale Struktur, Diätvorschriften, Sprache, Berufe, Kleidung, Haartracht, Kalender, Feiertage, Gebethäuser, Schulen, Medizin, Küche, Mythen, Mystik, Philosophie, Literatur etc. gehören. Adlers Vorwurf: 'Genau das Gegenteil von dem, was Mein Kampf und seine Herausgeber meinen, ist der Fall: Die Juden zeichnen sich durch ihre ganz besonders stark ausgearbeitete Kultur aus.' Das aber erfährt der Leser nicht.Wie hat das IfZ darauf reagiert Es hat sich keinen Deut um die Kritik gekümmert, sich im Lob um die Ausgabe gesonnt und Adlers Widerspruch als 'infam' bezeichnet, statt ihn zu widerlegen. Offenbar hat Adler, der klug, überaus sachlich und kenntnisreich argumentiert, einen Nerv getroffen. In seinem jüngst im Bremer Donat Verlag erschienenen Buch 'Das absolut Böse - Zur Neuedition von Mein Kampf ' erweitert er nun seine Kritik um ein Vielfaches, nennt zahlreiche Irrtümer ebenso beim Namen wie die auf Unkenntnis beruhenden Interpretationen und regt damit zu einer neuen Auseinandersetzung mit unserer unmittelbaren Vergangenheit an. Saul Friedländer hebt in seinem Geleitwort hervor, dass Jeremy Adler die moralische Frage sowie die wissenschaftlichen Verfehlungen 'brillant und in großartigem Detail behandelt'.
