Sponsored by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research of the DOE Office of Science. This report represents the discussions and findings of a major workshop conducted in Arlington, VA, in November, 2008, to identify the future needs in the field of climate change integrated assessment. From an on-line posting: "Anthony C. Janetos was Director of the Joint Global Change Research Institute from October 2006 through May of 2013. He is now the Director of the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University. Dr. Janetos previously served as vice president of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment in Washington, D.C., where he directed the center's Global Change Program. He has written and spoken widely to policy, business, and scientific audiences on the need for scientific input and scientific assessment in the policymaking process and about the need to understand the scientific, environmental, economic, and policy linkages among the major global environmental issues. Climate change and other global environmental changes remain among the most serious and difficult environmental issues, Janetos noted recently. The consequences of global change are far-reaching, ranging from impacts on agriculture and ecosystems to potential concerns for human health and long-term sustainable development. Strategies for addressing global change involve technological and economic choices that will themselves affect societies for decades. The technological, scientific, and economic research questions raised by different strategies to deal with the causes and consequences of global change are the foundation for the work of the Joint Global Change Research Institute. Dr. Janetos has served on several national and international study teams, including working as a co-chair of the U.S. National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change. He also was an author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change s Special Report on Land-Use Change and Forestry, the Global Biodiversity Assessment, and a coordinating lead author in the recently published Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. He currently serves as a member of the National Research Council s Committee on Earth Science and Applications from Space. Dr. Janetos graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with a bachelor s degree in biology and earned a master s degree and a Ph.D. in biology from Princeton University." Good. No dust jacket. Dr. Robert T. Watson is the Chief Scientist and Director for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development at the World Bank. In May 1996, Watson joined the World Bank as Senior Scientific Advisor at the Environment Department. He is also Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Before joining the Bank, Watson was Associate Director for Environment in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President in the White House. Prior to joining the Clinton White House, Watson was Director of the Science Division and Chief Scientist for the NASA's Office of Mission to Planet Earth. Watson has received many national and international awards and prizes, including the AAAS Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility in 1993. There is no doubt that the Earth's fragile environment is changing. Over the years our the natural environment has been taken advantage of in order to meet basic human needs, says environmental scientist, Dr. Robert Watson. Watson believes that the Earth's physical and biological systems, which provide us with the goods and services essential for survival, are being degraded. In his presentation, Watson will demonstrate the scientific and policy inter-linkages among these global environmental issues, their relationship with local and regional environmental issues and with our ability to meet basic human needs in a sustainable manner. Also, Watson also will emphasize the global environmental problems that are caused by economic and population growth.
