Printed by the editors, Cambridge and Cheltenham, January 1968, edition of 500 copies; 160 x 197mm, pp44 plus black and white cover designed by John James and printed on coated card; text in typescript on gold paper, stab stitched, and with an errata slip titled "Gross Errors" pasted in at the back; staples slightly rusted but otherwise a good to very good copy of this now scarce publication. . . . The second series of this innovative small magazine of modern poetry was intended to be published "as and when the material is ready" at a cost of 3/- per issue or a bulk advance rate of 10/- for all four intended. In the event all four did appear, 2R4 being published just over a year later in February 1969 . . . . Contributors to 2R1 included J H Prynne, Gill Vickers, Jeremy Mulford, Elaine Feinstein, Andrew Crozier, Nick Wayte, Wendy Mulford, John Hall and John James. The series is dedicated to Charles Tomlinson for his earlier help. . . . Prynne's poems are "First Notes on Daylight", "Acquisition of Love", "Quality in that Case as Pressure", and, "Senor Vazquez speakng and further soft Music to Eaty by". All of these titles had their first printing in The English Intelligencer the previous year, their appearance in Resuscitator being their second public outing. . . This is the first issue of the poetry quarterly started by the three poets named, which continued for ten issues and which featured many latterly important poets. This first issue is very conservatively, indeed rather boringly, printed in marked contrast to the approach taken later (see item 798). It includes work by Charles Tomlinson, Francis Berry and David Holbrook as well as by the editors and others, poems and some criticism included. . . Prynne & Crozier's conflation of anonymous responses from the poets who attended MacSweeney's Sparty Lea poetry festival issued as if part of the English Intelligencer (although separately paginated). From the library of Pete Armstrong who has pencilled in a number of fellow contributors' names. This collage of voices; interwoven extracts from their "Personal" accounts constitutes a fascinating historical record (in the round, so to speak) of what has come to seem an almost mythical British poetry revival happening. As MacSweeney was later to put it: "Two kinds of poets met here, read together, settled somehow to each others' work." Blank rear verso a little toned, foxed & soiled. Folded once. V. scarce. Book.
