Soft Cover. Condition: New. First Edition. This thought provoking study of the development of architecture, and the impact of architectural models on this evolution, in southeast Asia, draws for its early examples primarily from surviving Hindu-Buddhist monuments in Cambodia and Java. Dumarçay argues that, despite the fact that individual physical locations may merit innovation, new construction nevertheless tends to be constrained by pre-existing architectural models, appropriate to the new situation or otherwise, which are held within the collective conscience of a given culture. This tendency may further be strengthened in the event that an insecure regime seeks to employ architectural monuments to aggrandize its political position. The inappropriate use of models may also occur when architectural styles are transplanted from one culture into another. A break from the models of the past-and thus true innovation-may develop only when a master builder both has sufficient confidence in his own artistic vision and works within a context that allows him the freedom to express this vision. 128 pp., 70 b&w illustrations, chronological table, index Size: 23 x 15 cm.

Hard bound. Condition: Fine. First Edition. The House in South-East Asia covers traditional domestic architectural forms from the earliest reconstructions of Dong Son culture through the different regional variants on the mainland and in the archipelago. Special attention is given to the way building materials, mostly wood, affected structures, and there is a chapter devoted to the techniques of roof construction. Expatriate influences in house forms, notably Chinese, European and Anglo-Indian, are covered and current trends surveyed. The volume is lavishly illustrated with colour plates and line drawings by the author. Monsieur Dumarcay is a noted French architect currently working in Indonesia for the Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Orient. He has previously published with Oxford Borobudur and The Temples of Java. Like these two volumes, The House in South-East Asia has been translated and edited by Michael Smithies. 74 pp., 16 colour and 33 b&w plates, bibliography. Slight tanning of cover; otherwise new copy in original shrink-wrap. Size: 20 x 14 cm.

Hard bound. Condition: Very Good. First English Edition. Of the numerous cultural sites in Cambodia, the best known by far is Angkor. The great archaeological remains found there are ranked among the most important in the world. The Site of Angkor introduces the reader to this remarkable complex. Its main focus is on the principal phases of construction at Angkor which reached their peaks with Angkor Wat and subsequently with Angkor Thom. It also narrates the pillage, temporary reoccupation, dormancy, rediscovery, and restoration of Angkor. Jacques Dumarcay has spent a lifetime of research devoted to Angkor and other archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. He is a leading expert on the temples and is admirably placed to summarize their most important features. Translated from the original French by Michael Smithies. 96 pp., 20 col. & 24 b&w illustrations, map. New copy in original shrik wrap. Size: 20 x 14 cm.
