Includes the original Cyrillic texts and translations of 13 fourteenth and fifteenth century "testaments" of the 9 Grand Princes of Moscow from Ivan I to Ivan IV. Howes' extensive introduction dicusses how the documents shed light on "territorial acquisitions, princely administration and the composition of the prince's household, material culture, and the changing concept of the state". Hardcover, full blue cloth with gilt title on spine; shows light shelf wear, base of spine bumped; binding tight, and text clean. Jacket rubbed, with edgewear and 2 short tears, spine somewhat faded. Xvii, blank, 445 pgs; bibliography; glossary; index; 1 fold-out map, a few b/w photos. Size: Large Octavo.
