Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book re-examines the Lay of Dolon, a section of Homer's Iliad. Long considered to be of lesser value and authenticity than the rest of the epic, the author argues that the Doloneia is actually an integral and valuable part of the Iliad. Exploring how the Lay of Dolon has been discredited by textual critics, the author challenges their methodology and assumptions. The book also touches on linguistic analysis of the Iliad, Homer's use of formulaic language, and the difficulties of distinguishing between early and late elements in the poem. It concludes by suggesting that the Iliad developed over several centuries before being given its final form by a single great poet, whose genius rendered it the unique masterpiece that it is. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The Odyssey - Volume with minor split to lower spine. Interior in excellent condition besides an occasional appearance of a fainted dampstain. August Immanuel Bekker (21 May 1785 7 June 1871) was a German philologist and critic. Born in Berlin, Bekker completed his classical education at the University of Halle under Friedrich August Wolf, who considered him as his most promising pupil. In 1810 he was appointed professor of philosophy in the University of Berlin. For several years, between 1810 and 1821, he travelled in France, Italy, England and parts of Germany, examining classical manuscripts and gathering materials for his great editorial labours. Some of the fruits of his researches were published in the Anecdota Graeca (3 vols, 18141821), but the major results are to be found in the enormous array of classical authors edited by him. Anything like a complete list of his works would occupy too much space, but it may be said that his industry extended to nearly the whole of Greek literature with the exception of the tragedians and lyric poets. His best known editions are those of Plato (18161823), Oratores Attici (18231824), Aristotle (18311836), Aristophanes (1829), and twenty-five volumes of the Corpus Scriptorum Historiae Byzantinae. The only Latin authors edited by him were Livy (18291830) and Tacitus (1831). Bekker confined himself entirely to manuscript investigations and textual criticism; he contributed little to the extension of other types of scholarship. Bekker numbers have become the standard way of referring to the works of Aristotle and the Corpus Aristotelicum. He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1861. He died in Berlin aged 86. (Wikipedia) Sprache: greek.

Hardcover. The leather bound volume measures 6.25" x 3.5". The leather boards are scuffed and worn, but shine with the patina of time after being treated with archival leather dressing. The hinges are loose, and while the boards are intact and the binding is held together by 4 sewn cotton cords, the leather spine is missing. The signatures are all in place but delicately so. Printed on quality rag paper. With an engraved frontispiece dated, 1677,"The Works of Homer: Eng. by T. Hobbes. With a bust of Homer, an oval portrait of Hobes, and engravings of 2 Greek soldiers in full armor along the right and left margins. With two small scallop-shaped pieces missing at the top edge, not affecting the engraving. .The two volumes are bound together as one: The volume begins with Hobbes' preface: "To the Reader Concerning the Virtues of an Heroique poem (18 pages). Then a list of Books Newly Printed by William Crook (2 pages). Then 4 pages of the Contents of the Iliad, followed by 6 pages of books printed for William Crook at the Green Dragon. Then commences the Iliad, from page 1 to p. 384. Then comes a 4-page life of Homer written by J. Wallim, followed by the Odyssey which runs from p. 1 to 301. A remarkable survivor, and quite an uncommon volume. Thomas Hobbes (1588 1679) was an English philosopher, considered to be one of the founders of modern political philosophy.[5][6] Hobbes is best known for his 1651 book Leviathan, in which he expounds an influential formulation of social contract theory.[7] In addition to political philosophy, Hobbes contributed to a diverse array of other fields, including history, jurisprudence, geometry, theology, and ethics, as well as philosophy in general. In 1651, the translation of De Cive was published under the title Philosophical Rudiments concerning Government and Society.[24] Also, the printing of the greater work proceeded, and finally appeared in mid-1651, titled Leviathan, or the Matter, Forme, and Power of a Common Wealth, Ecclesiastical and Civil. It had a famous title-page engraving depicting a crowned giant above the waist towering above hills overlooking a landscape, holding a sword and a crozier and made up of tiny human figures. The work had immediate impact.[22] Soon, Hobbes was more lauded and decried than any other thinker of his time.[22] The first effect of its publication was to sever his link with the exiled royalists, who might well have killed him.[22] The secularist spirit of his book greatly angered both Anglicans and French Catholics.[22] Hobbes appealed to the revolutionary English government for protection and fled back to London in winter 1651.[22] After his submission to the Council of State, he was allowed to subside into private life[22] in Fetter Lane.Hobbes spent the last four or five years of his life with his patron, William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire, at the family's Chatsworth House estate. He had been a friend of the family since 1608 when he first tutored an earlier William Cavendish.[28] After Hobbes's death, many of his manuscripts would be found at Chatsworth House.[29]His final works were an autobiography in Latin verse in 1672, and a translation of four books of the Odyssey into "rugged" English rhymes that in 1673 led to a complete translation of both Iliad and Odyssey in 1675. (Wikipedia) With "The Second Edition" stated on the title page, dated 1677.
