Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Maurice Hewlett , in his day, was one of the most popular and respected novelists writing. His prose is crisp without being snippy; his humor is gentle but pointed, without being nippy. "The Open Road" is a romance of sorts, and a darn good one. It's a novel of the sort that isn't being written any more, so if you'd like to escape from the modern world to an Edwardian universe wherein neither of the two devastating world wars had yet to happen, when carriages and broughams and top hats and tails, derbies and boaters for the men and outrageously ornate hats and corsets were the norm for womenfolk, a pretty woman might yet "turn an ankle", and the business class were just that - then this novel might be just what the doctor ordered! Just a brief note about Maurice Hewlett (I've said this elsewhere) - he was well regarded by the reading public and critics alike, and had several lasting friendships among literary notables, including Ezra Pound and James Barrie. Barrie named one of the pirates ('Cecco') in "Peter Pan" after Hewlett's son, Francis.
