En la invitación del Instituto de Pueblos en Nueva York, Hegemann abandonó Berlín para realizar una gira de conferencias en EE.UU., en 1913. El capítulo 3 comienza con una descripción del año en que visitó grandes y medianas ciudades en la gira y termina ocho años después con la publicación de Manual de Arte Civil para el Arquitecto: El Vitrubio Americano y su regreso a Alemania.
