First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). This book is in really exceptional condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The bottom edge of the spine has is a tiny bit of crinkling. The cover edges and corners look terrific, no rubbing at all. The page edges look very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I haven't found even one instance of soiling. The white inside covers and end papers are perfectly clean. The pages are in terrific shape. I haven't found any instances of creasing. Really the only imperfection is very minor, the same group of a few very tiny scratches just off the top edge of one side of the Title, Contents and Preface pages. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The dust jacket is rated only Good Minus. Some occurrence created a group of scratches, along with a crease and a small tear off the bottom edge of the front cover. There are no other tears on the jacket. There are also a few thin scratches off the top edge of the front cover. The top edge of the spine as a little bit of crinkling. The front flap is in very good shape. The rear flap has one tiny light tan spot, a little crease at its top corner, and a thin but the longer crease starting at its bottom edge and ending nearly halfway up the middle edge. The jacket is not priced or clipped. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. I removed it to better examine the dust jacket. I will replace it with a new one after the photos are scanned. Part One of the book is titled Essays on Offner. One is titled The Unmaking of a Connoisseur (Ladis), the second Richard Offner and the Ineffable: A Problem in Connoisseurship (Maginnis), and the third Glimpses of Richard Offner (Smyth). Part Two is titled Essays by Offner and contains fourteen of his essays. The book ends with a Bibliography of Richard Offner's published writings and an Index. This is an uncommon book and I have discounted the price due to the scratches on the front cover of the jacket.

The Rhetoric of Soft Power: Public Diplomacy in Global Contexts provides a comparative assessment of public diplomacy and strategic communication initiatives in order to portray how Joseph Nyes notion of soft power has translated into context-specific strategies of international influence. The book examines four casesJapan, Venezuela, China, and the United Statesto illuminate the particular significance of culture, foreign publics, and communication technologies for the foreign policy ambitions of each country. This study explores the notion of soft power as a set of theoretical arguments about power, and as a reflection of how nation-states perceive what is an increasingly necessary perspective on international relations in an age of ubiquitous global communication flows and encroaching networks of non-state actors. Through an analysis of policy discourse, public diplomacy initiatives, and related programs of strategic influence, soft power in each case represents a localized set of assumptions about the requirements of persuasion, the relevance of foreign audiences to state goals, and the perception of what counts as a soft power resource. This timely analysis provides an unprecedented comparative investigation of the relationship between soft power and public diplomacy. The Rhetoric of Soft Power: Public Diplomacy in Global Contexts provides new insight into the global growth of the soft power concept, through a comprehensive, comparative analysis of public diplomacy and strategic communication initiatives.
