The cover illustration of the Hotel El Tovar by Louis Benton Akin was taken from a large, 22 x 40 inch, chromolithograph published by W. J. Black, American Lithographic Co., 1906. Around 1903, Akin relocated to the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. He lived with the Hopi for a few years and painted many aspects of their daily life. By 1905 he was showing his works in New York City, Philadelphia, and elsewhere. In the same year, his talent was discovered by Arizona Railways that funded him to portrait a sketch on Indians to highlight significance of the region as a tourist destination. He toured the area to paint his famed paintings Hopi and other life-depicting portraits. His artwork depicting the life of Indians were admiringly adopted by the Railways advertisement printouts. For the rest of his life, Akin alternated time between New York City and Arizona, with a few trips to North American wilderness areas. Akin became known for numerous landscapes of the Grand Canyon, but also painted the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Boston, crown octavo, [1-13], 14-439 p. and two chromolithographed plates by Prang. Half-title page present. ***CONTENT: This work, the second volume of Hamlin's popular trilogy on gemstones, is mostly devoted to diamonds, but there are also chapters on emeralds, opals, and sapphires. The volume explores the historic, scientific, and aesthetic significance of gemstones from antiquity through Victorian times. The splendid color plates illustrate the Russian Imperial crown and a spectacular sapphire crystal from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). ***CONDITION: A Near-Fine copy in the original brown cloth with a gilt-embossed front cover bearing the crown of Empress Anna Ivanovna of Russia, and with a gilt-lettered backstrip decorated with a gilt sapphire crystal from Hamlin's collection. All the gilt is bold and bright. The covers are near pristine, showing only minor spotting to the rear board. The joints, hinges, and binding are solid. The text pages are fresh, clean, and bright, but one leaf is missing the upper outer corner, with loss to two words. The plates and their protective tissue sheets are lightly toned, as typical, but otherwise are very well preserved. Previous ownership indications include a library blindstamp on the title page, a borrowing label on a rear pastedown, and typical docketing numbers. No exterior markings. Conditions noted, this is a very handsome copy of this scarce volume. Sinkankas 2695. BMNH 779 (second edition). International shipping will be extra for this volume, but only at my cost.
