It was edited by Jamaican-born Walter Adolphe Roberts (1886-1962), who also contributed to this issue a short editorial, a play (THE QUEEN'S TENT, pp. 62-80), an article (AL SMITH FOR PRESIDENT), and a book review. This issue is filled with short stories, poetry, and essays. Of special interest is Adolphe de Castro's 17-page essay, AMBROSE BIERCE AS HE REALLY WAS, AN INTIMATE ACCOUNT OF HIS LIFE AND DEATH. Adolphe de Castro met Bierce in 1886, became his protégé, and "wrote" a novella in collaboration with him. The article published here is the basis for the controversial explanation of Bierce's 1913 disappearance into revolution-torn Mexico. (de Castro claimed that Bierce had been shot by soldiers under orders from Pancho Villa). Originally printed in 1835, this beautifully illustrated Bible features 41 full-page steel engravings (including frontispieces and engraved general title) by some of the most renown painters and illustrators of their times, such as Gustave Doré, Philip James de Loutherbourg, Horace Vernet, Ary Scheffer, Leonardo da Vinci, etc. Concise dictionary of the Bible, footnotes, with center references by Rev. Alexander Fletcher. The four pages for family record bound between the Testaments are unused. New Testament is followed by an 80 page index and concise dictionary of the Bible. Listed as Hills 1777. Heavy rubbing along edges of binding. 4 1/2" closed tear along lower front joint. Closed tears with minor chipping along fore-edge of front free endpaper. Clear water-staining along fore-edge of very first pages (not affecting images or text). Verso of plate 27 partly taped. Minor to moderate foxing / age-toning throughout. A few tissue-guards are missing, and some are partly torn. Binding in overall good-, interior in good- to good+ condition.

First edition, 8vo, 8 x 5 inches, xxxii [4] + 666 + [4 publisher's catalogue]. Bound in original full calf decorated in blind, spine partially rebacked preserving the original appearance, unlettered. Slight damp stain to the last two leaves, and a worm has attacked the lower margins of several pages without affecting the text. Otherwise a crisp clean copy. This work was published anonymously but it is know to be by Sire David Hamilton who had become famous as a man-midwife and physician to Queen Anne, who knighted him. He became invaluable to the queen as her confidante and counsellor. He was a devout dissenting Christian and this work is a thorough examination of the religious controversy of his day.
