Add to baskethardcover. second edition. 8vo 550pp. later printing of second edition. from Preface: "This book is an enlarged and revised edition of a book published, with the same title, by the late Thomas Bulfinch, of Boston, in the year 1855. From the moment of its publication it met with a favorable reception, both from the teachers of young people, and form the young people themselves,--and it has been in constant circulation and demand since that time. The stereotype plates having been wholly worn out in the publication of successive editions, the publishers have asked me to revise the book, in preparation for a new and enlarged edition,--and in particular, to add such references to the literature of the last thirty years as might carry forward the admirable plan of the author, and, for readers of the English language, might bring the book down to the present time." #02981. Book VG-: soil/wear to boards and spine, rubbing/shelf wear to corners, spine sunned, toning and foxing to endpapers, gift inscription FFEP, text clean, binding tight.

Edward Everett Hale, and many more. It was edited by Ambrose P. Dietz. This work was published and sold for the Youths' Directory of San Francisco, "a benevolent institution for friendless boys". This organisation provided food and shelter for homeless boys in San Francisco, encouraging them out of crime and towards education and employment. This work, which was created to raise funds for the Youths' Directory, contains original contributions which have not been printed elsewhere, such as Robert Ferral's Our Camp in '64 and John S. Hittell's Mining Life in Shasta in 1849. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with light shelf wear to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Boards are a little warped. Hinges are starting but remain firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a light tide mark to the head of the occasional page. A nice copy with some age mellowing a bit of shelf rubbing to the edges. AN EXACT REPRODUCTION OF THE TEXT AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION PUBLISHED AND COPYRIGHTED IN BOSTON IN THE YEAR 1833 BY MUNRO &FRANCIS. Some believe the original Mother Goose was the Bostonian wife of Isaac Goose, either named Elizabeth Foster Goose (16651758) or Mary Goose (d. 1690). "Mother Goose" used to sing songs and ditties to her grandchildren all day, and other children swarmed to hear them. Finally, it was said, her son-in-law gathered her jingles together and printed them, but no evidence of such a printing has ever been found.
