Kleine Abreibung auf der Einbandvorderrseite, ansonsten guter Zustand. - Gropius, Walter, Architekt und Industriedesigner, *Berlin 18.5. 1883, Boston (Massachusetts) 5.7. 1969; arbeitete nach dem Studium in München und Berlin (1908-10) bei P. Behrens. 1910 eröffnete er ein eigenes Büro mit A. Meyer als Mitarbeiter, 1918 wurde er Direktor der Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar, 1919 gründete er dort das Bauhaus, dessen Direktor er bis 1928 war. In den folgenden Jahren wirkte er als Architekt in Berlin (Wohnblöcke der Siedlung Siemensstadt, 1929-30). 1933 emigrierte er nach London, wo er 1934- 37 mit M. Fry zusammenarbeitete (Impington Village College bei Cambridge). 1937-52 lehrte er an der Havard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) und gründete dort eine eigene Architekturschule. Bis zu seinem Tod lebte er in Lincoln (Massachusetts). Gropius war einer der faszinierendsten Vertreter der neuen, auf Zweckmäßigkeit hin entworfenen Architektur mit einer betont blockartigen, streng geometrischen Bauweise (internationaler Stil). Den Ausgangspunkt seiner Tätigkeit bildeten Industriebauten wie das 1910-12 und 1913 -15 erbaute Faguswerk in Alfeld (Leine) und die Fabrikanlage für die Deutsche Werkbundausstellung in Köln (1914), ferner Bauten für das Bauhaus in Dessau (1925-26) und Wohnsiedlungen (u.a. Dessau-Törten, 1926-28). Mit dem Blockhaus für den Bauunternehmer Adolf Sommerfeld in Berlin-Steglitz (1920-21) und dem Denkmal für die Opfer des Kapp-Putsches auf dem Friedhof in Weimar (1920-22) näherte sich Gropius vorübergehend dem Expressionismus. Seiner Forderung nach einem Zusammenwirken aller Künste gemäß entwarf er selbst kunstgewerbliche Gegenstände. Daneben betonte er die Verlegung vom Handwerklichen auf die industrielle Fertigung und Formgebung, um zu einer rationelleren und funktionelleren Bauweise zu gelangen (v.a. für Wohnsiedlungen). Das pragmatische und sozialverantwortliche Handeln wurde zum Grundsatzprogramm der Architekturschule in Cambridge und des von Gropius gegründeten Architektenteams TAC (The Architects Collaborative). Es fand nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in dem Harvard Graduate Center (1948þ50) und dem Beitrag für das Hansaviertel in Berlin (1955-57, Interbau-Ausstellung 1957) deutlichen Niederschlag. Zu Gropius' Spätwerken gehören die US-Botschaft in Athen (1956þ61), das PAN AM Building in New York (1958-63) und die Porzellanfabrik Rosenthal in Selb (1965þ67). Nach seinen Plänen wurde 1976-79 postum in Berlin das Bauhaus-Archiv errichtet. Gropius' richtungweisende Rolle für die Architektur des 20.Jahrhunderts findet auch Ausdruck in seinen pädagogisch-theoretischen Schriften: »Idee und Aufbau des Staatlichen Bauhauses Weimar« (1923), »Architektur.
