Set in the American Southwest during the mid-19th century, and it tells the story of a man named Jim Bowie, who is known as the Big Scalphunter among the Native American tribes in the region. Bowie is a skilled hunter and warrior, and he has earned the respect of the tribes by living among them and learning their ways. The novel follows Bowie as he navigates the complex relationships between the various tribes and the white settlers who are encroaching on their land. Bowie is torn between his loyalty to the Native Americans and his desire to protect his own people from the violence and bloodshed that is tearing the region apart. As the story unfolds, Bowie finds himself in the middle of a conflict between two powerful tribes, the Comanches and the Apaches. He must use all of his skills and knowledge to prevent a war between the two tribes and to find a way to bring peace to the region.
