Trade Paperback. Condition: Mint. First Thus. THE CURLING LETTERS OF THE ZULU WAR 'There Was Awful Slaughter' Edited by Adrian Greaves & Brian Best. Pen & Sword Ltd, Barnsley. 2004 First Thus. ISBN 1844151425 158pp Illustrated Trade Paperback. This copy is in mint, unread condition, bright, white, tight and square, in illustrated card covers as issued. Henry Curling was commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1868 and was sent to South Africa in 1878. He would serve in the Zulu War and be one of five British officers who survived the defeat at Isandlwana. During this time, he maintained a correspondence with his family that provides us with an unvarnished look at the British army. Curling possessed the prejudices of a man of his time and social class. He was an indifferent soldier and never claimed to be anything more. Thus, he gives us an everyman's view of the reasons for the British defeat and the sheer awfulness of that memorable day at Isandlwana. This is an outstanding contribution to the literature of the Zulu War made all the better by the work of the knowledgeable editors. Although Curling is a likeable character, it is impossible to ignore Garnet Wolseley's view of the surviving officers. "I don't like the idea of officers escaping on horseback when their men on foot are killed". Ref LL3.
