N. von Hontheim (1701-1790) veröffentlichte unter dem Pseudonym J. Febronius das hier vorliegende aufsehenerregende Werk, das eine weitgehende Reduktion päpstlicher Rechte zugunsten des Episkopats und einer Wiedervereinigung im Glauben propagiert und damit den Febronianismus begründete. Der Text wurde bis 1773 auf insgesamt 5 Bände erweitert, allerdings bereits 1764 auf den Index gesetzt. Nach hartnäckigem Leugnen seiner Verfasserschaft verstand sich von Hontheim 1778 zum förmlichen Widerruf. Dennoch übte der Text einen nachhaltigen Einfluß auf die Kirchen- und Geistesgeschichte des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts aus (vgl. LthK).
