The Kurnell Peninsula is an ancient island of Hawkesbury Sandstone linked to the mainland at Cronulla by a sandspit. Kurnell is almost completely surrounded by water. Kurnell claims the title Birthplace of a Nation as it here that on April 29th 1770 that James Cook of H.M. Bark Endeavour made his first landing on Australian soil. (No date, about 1971 or later.
