Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Maurice Sendak (illustrator). 1st Edition. Scarce science book most notable as Maurice Sendak's first illustrated book. Dr. Eidinoff, who was part of the Atomic Bomb Project at Columbia University and the University of Chicago, teamed up with Hyman Ruchlis, a high school science teacher to write this book. Ruchlis had a student, Maurice Sendak, who was talented in drawing, so he asked Sendak if he would like to provide the illustrations for the book. Sendak accepted and was paid $100 for his contribution. The book is profuse with illustrations on nearly every page and was published when he was only 19. First Spanish Edition. Hardback, no dust jacket. Boards are covered in blue cloth with a Coleccion Saber pastedown on the front and faded gilt lettering on the spine. All edges have significant rubbing and corners are bent, but no board is exposed. Remnants of a glued sticker on the spine. Spine and hinges are intact. Pages are clean. There is a stamp on the half-title page that someone has diligently tried to erase, fairly successfully, but the page is very thin there. Some tanning in the hinges and on the page ends. No funky odors. And, of course, so many Maurice Sendak illustrations! A lovely map of his early talent. 349 pages. Acceptable to good condition.
