Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Firmly bound, clean unmarked pages, slight creasing to jacket edges. This is a riveting read. I don't generally read biographies but once I picked this book up I could hardly put it down. It makes me feel our lives these days are hollow and tawdry compared to the thrills and excitement of this mans life as a surgeon in the navy. He had a grandstand seat at some amazing events during the opium wars and the founding of Hong Kong. He was not in the front line of the battles and skirmishes he witnessed but he describes the events in a spare and yet engaging style. The whole thing is enhanced by his lovely illustrations, he developed his skills whilst travelling. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical action and adventure.
