This collection of essays by established scholars covers some of the important aspects of society, polity and religion in India. The aspects covered in this book are important not only historically but also in the contemporary context. Whatever has been included in this volume will certainly provide a window to the world, providing a glimpse of the contemporary Indian scenario mainly in the context of politics and religion, their interplay and particularly the construction of varied identities based on religion and other social factors such as caste, community and gender.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. The book is primarily a self-presentation of Indian sociologists and their recent theoretical and empirical research endeavours. Not only it provides an opportunity for diagnosing what Indian sociologists have identified as the most important issues for various social communities, but also helps reproduce the idiomatic interpretation of modernization in the colonial and post-colonial contexts. And, last but not least, it offers a convenient point of departure for reflection on Western Europe and its international role-modelling function. The book deserves to be read carefully not only because it provides an excellent review of universality, rationality and diversity in post-colonial India but also because it shows that it makes sense to translate the western world of modernization into the categories and images of Indian capitalist modernization. By approaching the determinants, mechanisms and consequences of this translation in contemporary India so comprehensively and insightfully, it directs our attention towards European modernization rationale and helps take stock of European sociological achievements. And, it is particularly valuable for Polish sociology and sociologists to have a better view of the Western European case of translation of capitalist models of transformation vis-à-vis the European context and the global context.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. This volume addresses the rich and varied thoughts, concepts, approaches and leisure practices in sixteen countries of the three continents Australia, Asia and Africa. Per continent listed in alphabetical order in this volume information is provided on the development of leisure in: Australia and New Zealand for the continent Australia; China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea, The Philippines and Turkey for Asia; and, Africa (a summarizing article), Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria and South Africa for the African continent. As far as the approach and contents are concerned, the chapters show a rich variety. What they have in common, however, is the notion that, seemingly, though named and shaped differently in respective societies and manifesting themselves in many forms and ways, concepts and practices of leisure are found all over the world, from pre-historic settlements to the present day modern mass media societies. Seemingly, being at leisure is a human species capacity that comes at birth and flowers in a variety of individual and societal contexts. Even where leisure is given little room and chance to come to the surface and get official recognition as being an aspect of life that deserves attention from the authorities too, it is contextual, because it is shaped by the societal circumstances, such as being colonized or being extremely work-centered. This is a welcome initiative to produce a book on the developments in leisure from a global and comparative perspective. (jacket).

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. This book is the second of the four-volume Festschrift Modernization, Globalization and Social Transformation in honour of one of the stalwarts of sociology in India, Professor Yogendra Singh. As the title Education, Religion and Creativity suggests, it has three sections. The first section on education examines not only the state of higher education in a globalizing India, decline of the university as a public institution, and the trends of youth sexuality but also the challenges for curriculum, issue of sex education in the broader context of tradition and modernity, besides the sociology of textbooks. A case study of a school near the India-Pakistan border also raises the hope of peace in the overall context of civil-military relations. The second section focusing on religion investigates how religion could be mobilized for dignity and development of a dalit community, and also how a heritage village besides being a sacred place can emerge as a modern, developed village. While one paper argues that Hinduism is inclusivist and not exclusivist, another one shows that how the Jagannath Temple, one of the icons of Hinduism, promotes exclusivism, inclusivism and pluralism at the same time. The papers in the last section on creativity analyse not only the relationship between literature and society but also between time and creativity from sociological perspective. A thorough sociological review of the art of Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay has also been undertaken enriching the sociology of literature. Besides these, music as well as such creative and recreational dimensions of creativity as television, leisure and tourism have also been examined.(jacket).

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Leisure and Life through the Ages is a comprehensive account of eighteen countries from Europe to record developments in the field of leisure from a worldwide and comparative perspective. The coverage of the volume extends to Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden. The book also has a summarising article on Europe in the beginning which provides the basic general characteristics of leisure in Europe. Yet it may as well be said that in spite of certain basic features of leisure in Europe many of these countries are entertaining different practices and characteristics. All these papers have a thorough discussion on the broader perspective of leisure as it has existed during different periods of history in respective countries. The book will appeal to all those interested in the fields of leisure studies, cultural studies and sociology in general. (jacket).
