Hurgando hace un par de años en sus archivos, el fotógrafo Barry Feinstein exhumó un manojo de fotografías tomadas en Hollywood a principios de los años sesenta. Junto a ellas yacían veintitrés poemas compuestos en 1964 por su amigo Bob Dylan como glosa o complemento de esas imágenes. «Era el manuscrito perdido: todos lo habían olvidado», explicaría Feinstein. Tan perdido estaba, al menos en los laberintos de la memoria, que el propio autor no recordaba haberlo escrito. Las fotos retratan con desolada frialdad, a veces con afable ironía, el ocaso de una época («dorada» según la adjetivación canónica). Hay estrellas dentro o fuera del plató, pero el objetivo las contempla como si se hubieran caído del cielo. Hay también aspirantes al estrellato, idólatras, maniquíes, decorados ya inútiles y lugares intensamente deshabitados: una explanada vacía reservada a los coches del «talento», la piscina de Marylin el día de su muerte con dos peluches luctuosos que permanecen sobre el césped como las camisas aún colgadas en el armario de un muerto. Los versos se atienen a la partitura del desconcierto lírico que Dylan forjaba por aquellas fechas, una poética de la arbitrariedad (o sea, del libre arbitrio) que le permitía sacudir metáforas rigurosamente aleatorias, oraciones estrictamente agramaticales, neologismos inclementes, puntuaciones feroces, hermetismos, equívocos, juegos o jugarretas de palabras, pasajes narrativos, sarcasmos, penas, cariños, bromas, vulgaridades, anécdotas privadas, alusiones literarias o cinematográficas (cómo no), maneras del blues, tonos de balada e influencias líquidas o gaseosas (aunque la de Ginsberg era entonces bastante sólida).
