Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. Reissue. Fine, fresh, unread copy in equally fine dust jacket. First printing of this reissue of the 1945 original. Hardcover. Map endpaper. 307 pp. with index. With a new introduction for this edition by Nicholas Rankin. A foundational, non-fiction memoir of the Dunkirk e…vacuation of the British forces across the Channel in late May-early June in 1940. Divine piloted one of the "Little Ships" , a fleet of more than 800 small vessels including fishing boats, yachts, tugboats, ferries and private boats (the smallest was a mere 15 feet) that were requisitioned and used to evacuate some 336,000 Allied soldiers trapped on the French coast. Divine made three trips across the Channel in the 35 foot motorboat "White Wing" and the yawl "Little Ann". On his final trip across, Divine was wounded by gunfire, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for Bravery. His book "Dunkirk", being a contemporaneous account, is considered a key work of military history.

Paperback. Condition: New. Is inbreeding harmful? Are human beings and other primates naturally inclined to mate with their closest relatives? Why is incest widely prohibited? Why does the scope of the prohibition vary from society to society? Why does incest occur despite the prohibition? What are the consequences? After one hu…ndred years of intense argument, a broad consensus has emerged on the first two questions, but the debate over the others continues. That there is a biological basis for the avoidance of inbreeding seems incontrovertible, but just how injurious inbreeding really is for successive generations remains an open question. Nor has there been any conclusion to the debate over Freud's view that the incest taboo is necessary because humans are sexually attracted to their closest relatives-a claim countered by Westermarck's argument for the sexually inhibiting effects of early childhood association. This book brings together contributions from the fields of genetics, behavioral biology, primatology, biological and social anthropology, philosophy, and psychiatry which reexamine these questions.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing (March 1945). Blue cloth boards with gilt on the spine. Map endpapers. Interior is unmarked. Bottom fore-corner of text block lightly bumped. Dust jacket worn at head of spine; chipped at corners; some tears along top edge;… not price clipped; in an archival mylar sleeve. 307 pages. A highly detailed, day-by-day, study of the evacuation of Allied soldiers at Dunkirk, May 26-June 4, 1940. The author combines eye witness reporting and authoritative source material to describe the men, ships, planning and strategy of the evacuation, and provides quite a bit of necessary minutiae. The appendix includes a complete list of all the ships that took part in Operation Dynamo. The author, A. D. ''David'' Divine (1904-1987), was himself a participant at Dunkirk with the small boats, where he crossed the channel three times and was wounded on the final voyage. He went on to write several books on military issues, as well as novels, and after the war was the defence correspondent of the British Sunday Times.
