Ex libris the first Viscount Birkenhead, a.k.a. the Earl of Birkenhead, who was Lord Chancellor of England, and who had a library of more than 10,000 books. This bookplate for Viscount Birkenhead (Frederick Edwin Smith 1872-1930). has a dramatic armorial design with lions, a crested shield, and the Latin motto "Faber Mea Fortunae" (One makes one's own destiny). Viscount Birkenhead was a powerful British Conservative politician and a personal friend of Winston Churchill. He was titled Viscount in 1921, so the bookplate would date after that.
