During the last few years several fragments of this play have been discovered in papyri, and the importance of the Jerusalem Palimpsest has been definitely established. From this body of recent evi-dence there followed inevitably some important additions to the Apparatus, and changes in the text. The incorporation of the evidence in the Commentary alone was a possible but clumsy expedient, which the good-will of the Clarendon Press has made unnecessary. For the medieval manuscripts I have depended to a very great extent upon the collations of Prinz-Wecklein, Murray, and Méridier, verifying some doubtful points and making a few minor corrections. At the start, I had no confidence in my ability to improve these large and careful collations; in the end, I began to suspect and Mr. J. A. Spranger's pre-liminary researches have entirely convinced me that a new collation of the manuscripts would be by no means fruitless. I hope that my Apparatus, which of course contains only a selection of variant readings, will be found comparatively free from error; but this does not at all diminish the demand for a new and complete collation of the manuscripts for this and all the other plays of Euripides. A word about the Jerusalem Palimpsest. In August 1937 I acquired photographs of the Codex and collated Medea at once; I had barely finished when Mr. Spranger announced in The Classical Review that he was about to publish a colla-tion of the same palimpsest from photographs taken a few months before I acquired mine. The coincidence turned out happily for me, through Mr. Spranger's singular bene-volence. He sent me at once his own collation of Medea, from which I was able to correct and amplify my own; then correspondence and discussion still further improved this part of my work. Since Mr. Spranger is publishing a complete collation of the palimpsest, I am now able to confine myself to a selection of important readings. My debts of gratitude are indeed manifold. Mr. C. H. Roberts assisted me in my study of the new papyri; Mr. A. S. Owen and Mr. M. Platnauer sent me many important cor-rections of the work in proof; to Mr. J. D. Denniston I owe much light in darkness, and a searching examination of the Commentary; Professor J. D. Beazley's assistance with the chapter on Medea in Art was so great that little of mine remains except such errors as may be detected in the pre-sentation. But my heaviest obligation is to the profound learning and critical acumen of Professor Eduard Fraenkel. My constant demands upon his time and patience were answered with unfailing sympathy and assistance; and now, though much remains which he will judge still imperfect or erroneous, there is little which he has not improved.
