First Edition
ENGLISH : First edition, highly sought after, printed in 2,000 copies. A unique copy, remarkable both for its extraordinary binding and for its numerous additions. It is enriched with: A portrait of Voltaire after Largillière/Demautort A portrait of Henri IV by Dautel Ten full-page engravings by Moreau, engraved by Simonet Exceptional full olive-green morocco binding with gilt and inlaid mosaic decoration, curiously unsigned but attributable to Stikeman. The covers are framed by a double composition: at the edge, a fine roll of triangular dent-de-rat tooling; inside, a broad double-gilt-filet border. The entire panel is filled with a regular semé of small gilt-outlined quadrilobe cartouches, each enclosing an onlay of brick-red or dark plum morocco centered with a gilt rosette. Tiny gilt leafy sprays fill the interstices, completing the trellis pattern. Five-band spine gilt-tooled with dotted fillets; author, title and date gilt; compartments framed in gilt with a lozenge-shaped medallion of scalloped outline, decorated with small semé and central rosette, and recalling the red and plum onlays of the covers. All edges gilt and finely gauffered. Double gilt fillet along the board edges, guilloché headcaps. Gilt dentelle bordering the doublures; moiré silk endpapers in grey.Binding and interior pages perfectly preserved except for a few very minor rubs. A splendid, unique copy of Voltaire's celebrated epic poem, sumptuously bound and extra-illustrated. Rare original edition secretly printed in Rouen by the bookseller Viret, after Voltaire was refused permission to print it in France, in a climate of hostility towards Protestants that appears this ode to Henri IV, Protestant king and hymn to tolerance, true satire against Pope Clement XI which will stir up the hatred of the Catholics. Poem in nine cantos written in alexandrines, La Ligue is a composition skilfully mixing real events and fictions drawn from the world of the marvellous.

Paris, théâtre du Vaudeville, 1792. [4]-108p. Editions originales.
