Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive encyclopedia of architecture and the decorative arts. Published in 1750, this book was the fruit of years of research by Augustin-Charles DâAviler, an acclaimed architect. The author sought to compile an index of terms relevant to architecture and the related disciplines, from masonry and carpentry to gardening. This volume contains the first installment of DâAvilerâs ambitious project, a dictionary of terms beginning with the letters A through K. Within these pages, the reader will find clear definitions for a vast number of concepts, from the practical (such as the composition of different types of mortar) to the conceptual (such as the theories underpinning Greek architecture). Readers will also appreciate the wealth of historical information provided by the author, who frequently cites ancient sources and provides context for how different concepts evolved over time. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in architecture, the decorative arts, or the history of design. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Initially published in 1691, this comprehensive guide to architecture and architectural theory by an expert in the field equips readers with the foundational knowledge of the subject from ancient techniques to modern applications. The author's intention was to provide the most accurate and meticulous analysis of architectural concepts possible, resulting in a volume that has become a benchmark work, consistently reissued and expanded over the centuries. However, with its emphasis on the classical orders, proportion, and the relationship between theory and practice, this book does not solely concern itself with historical methods. The author also delves into the practical applications of architecture, such as decoration, engineering, and materials, making this a well-rounded and complete guide for anyone interested in the field, whether as an architect, builder, or as a lover of the subject. F. Blondel's work of the same title in 1771-1777." Fowler: "Vignola, another of the great protagonists of the Italian Renaissance, was as influencial in France, as Palladio was in England. There were numerous editions of his work, (39 of which are in the Fowler Collection)." Vignola, along with Serlio, Palladio and Scamozzi, comprised the four distinguished architectural theorists of the sixteenth century. Beginning as a painter, Vignola took up drawing, then architectural delineation and perspective; using these skills he drew many of the antiquities of Rome. Those endeavors had considerable influence on his designs. Vignola composed two architectural treatises, one on perspective and another on the Five Orders. Among the many important commissions Vignola enjoyed, his selection to complete St. Peter's Basilica in Rome after the death of Michelangelo stands preëminent. Text in French.
