Condition: Gut. XII; 288 S.; 23,5 cm. Gutes Ex.; Umschlag fragmentarisch; mit hebräischem Stempel. - Englisch. - The subject of conversion is one of the most debated and misunderstood theological subjects in modern Judaism. CONVERSION TO JUDAISM presents a history and analysis of this vital and controversial subject. The first section of the book is devoted to a presentation of references to this subject in Jewish classical sources from Biblical times to the present. This section also contains accounts of many instances of individual and group conversions to Judaism which have occurred down through the centuries. The second section contains analyses of the phenomenon of conversion to Judaism by a psychiatrist, a sociologist and a theologian. In the third and final section, a number of contemporary converts to Judaism tell how and why they accepted the Jewish religion and what have been the results of their years of living as Jews. Scholarly, yet popularly written, CONVERSION TO JUDAISM is a timely and provocative book. "The exhibition When things cast no shadow consisted of two parts one taking place by day, one by night. The daytime part of the 5th Berlin Biennale presented mainly new productions by 50 artists of four generations shown at four different venues?at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum and the Schinkel Pavilion. Many of the participating artists conceptualized and built their commissioned artworks explicitly in response to the specifically designated exhibition site. Already a few weeks prior to the official opening the first in a series of five solo exhibitions (curated by artists participating in the biennial) was launched at the Schinkel Pavilion as part of the 5th Berlin Biennale. Throughout the duration of the biennial these exhibitions gave insights into ways in which younger artists deal with topics such as the legacy of previous generations, modernity or various exhibition formats." -- publisher's statement. Fine. Two volumes, both with covers and contents clean and unmarked.

Hardcover. 8vo. Xii, 288 pages. First edition. SUBJECT (S) : Jewish converts; Proselytizing - Judaism. CONTENTS: Conversion to Judaism in Biblical times, Albert S. Goldstein; Conversion during the Talmudic period, Sidney B. Hoenig; In the port-Talmudic period, David J. Seligson; From expulsion to liberation, David M. Eichhorn; the last two centuries, Abraham Shusterman; Conversion: theologically speaking, B. J. Bamberger; Conversion: psychologically speaking, A. N. Franzblau; Conversion: sociologically speaking, Samuel Teitelbaum; The converts speak for themselves, Abraham Shusterman. Born in Pennsylvania, Eichhorn (1906-1986) studied at the University of Cincinnati and Hebrew Union College. He served as rabbi in Springfield, Mass. , Texarkana, Arkansas, and Tallahassee and Merritt Island, Florida. During WWII, he was the first Jewish chaplain to enter the Dachau concentration camp, and his April 30, 1945 service is often used in documentaries. He was awarded the Bronze Star and attained rank of lieutenant colonel. He was also chaplain at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A liberal, he favored the idea of rabbis officiating at mixed marriages, and chaired the CCAR Committee on the Unaffiliated. Much of his scholarship was focused on the history of conversion to and from Judaism. (EJ, 2007) Ex library, otherwise good condition. (RAB-29-4)xx.
