Soon into his progress, however, the author felt the writing beginning to pull away from the Rexroth model, becoming, instead, a series of short, sometimes plangent, sometimes meditative, sometimes exuberant takes on the beauty and travail of domestic life, on the separateness that is the enemy to love, on the witnessing of the night and the cold that lies at the heart of age and one's overview of all that life has meant.".

Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Tony Urquhart (illustrator). First Edition. ------------( 1st printing of the First Edition ) --- hardcover, a Near Fine example, in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, this copy has been signed and inscribed by the artist "a special edition for Stella H____ Tony urquhart July 1991", inscription is a bit cryptic to me as this is not a special edition but if just the hardcover edition issued by The Porcupine's Quill, 94 pages, predominately b&w images but there are some colour illos as well, ---" Cells of Ourselves includes fifty drawings (ten reproduced in full colour) organized allusively around the idea of a cage, presented alongside a prose commentary on the images. The drawings are all very small and reproduced, for the most part, size as. Tiny, but complex and richly detailed, these teeming miniature drawings are endlessly explorable meditations on the idea of the cage, the enclosure, the cordoned-off area: this cage theme encompasses everything from the calligraphic wrought-iron erected like architectonic ivy around French grave sites to depictions of animals in zoos, historical artefacts in glass cases, buildings within walls, anatomies of the Paris Metro cars, even an eloquent up-close exploration of the fearsome nature of an ordinary fly-swatter. --- Running through all these drawings of cages and grids is a common theme: that what is inside an enclosure is not so much a part of the greater world held captive, but rather a part of the world now intimately focussed for our inspection. The act of entrapment (mimicked, to some extent, by the artist) becomes an act of homage, an endeavour to hold something still so that its true nature can be understood, so that it becomes possible to see the world in a grain of sand rather than to see moments of selected experience as moments endlessly lost in flux, endlessly condemned to freedom and dissolution. -- Here the task of both artist and writer is to see much in little -- which is one of the states of reverie that leads to freedom."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo /// SIGNED ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE///---sizes are approximate (generally within 1/8 inch)--- Size: 9w x 8.25h Inches. Signed (see description). Flap Not Clipped.

Edited with an introduction by Gary Michael Dault. Barker Fairley, (1887-1986) was a British-born painter, writer, and German literature scholar, who spent almost all of his professional artistic life in Ontario, where he was also mentor and teacher to Charles Meanwell and Vincent Thomas. In his use of colour and form, the effect of the Group of Seven is quite evident. His critical approach and activism regarding The Group of Seven contributed to their acceptance in Canadian Art. "This magnificent volume, 147 images of the child in photography, is a comprehensive examination in image and text, of the total world of the child as seen by the finest photographers of the past century and a half. From pioneer photographer Julia Margaret Cameron's noble study of mother and child, 'The Kiss of Peace,' 1869 to French photographer B.A. King's poignant study of a little boy being carried into a lake on his father's shoulders, 1980, this extraordinary book illuminates children in all their variety, their lyrical uniqueness, and speaks to their bravery, tenacity, vulnerability, and to their troubling sorrows and their exalted joys. A searching document given over to an understanding of ourselves 'Children in Photography: 150 Years' is a passionate and sensuous addition to the business of being human and a loving homage to both the child at large and the child within." 312 pages. $50.00 in publication. *NOTE: Due to size and weight of book additional shipping will be required for out-of-U.S. shipment.
