Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. The book is in very good condition, minor shelf rubbing. Text inside appears clean and clear throughout. 'This book provides a critical and historiographical overview of non-mainstream ('fringe') claims and theories about language and languages presented by non-linguists, with an especial focus on work produced in the last fifty years. Topic areas include the origins and relationships of languages, historical and non-historical aspects of writing systems, linguistic material emanating from mysterious sources, supposed non-human languages, language and the mind, etc. The ideas discussed range from the truly bizarre to the merely dubious. The last chapter deals with some aspects of mainstream linguistics which appear to invite skeptical attention. Although there is a substantial critical literature on some specific topics of this kind, there has never before been a linguistically-informed general work on this entire topic area; this work remedies this situation. Newbrook outlines, explains and critiques a wide range of such ideas, in his capacity as a professional linguist associated with the world-wide skeptical movement. The intention is to be fair and free of dogmatism in making critiques, and not to 'debunk' without due consideration. Newbrook also addresses the question of how each set of non-mainstream ideas developed out of earlier (often largely non-linguistic) intellectual or quasi-intellectual background thinking. Unnecessary technicalities are avoided and key concepts are explained in a glossary or as they arise. Mark Newbrook completed a BA in Classics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford and went on to take an MA and a PhD in linguistics at the University of Reading, specialising in variationist historical dialectology and associated attitudinal matters. He was linguistics consultant to Australian Skeptics and now occupies similar roles in the equivalent British organisations. He has authored several books and many articles and reviews on various aspects of linguistics, notably sociolinguistics, dialectology and skeptical linguistics.' 388 pp. 5.9 x 8.25 inches. Beautifully bound in brown cloth and quarter brown leather with bright gilt-stamping, 6 /38 inches by 9 1/8 inches. Fine. Unbeknownst to the many admirers of Robin Williams was that he was a lover of books. Over the years, Williams had his own private press specially printing on fine papers and handsomely binding editions of the screenplays of some of the films he appeared in. They were all printed in very small quantities. Williams would sign them and then they would be sent to members of the cast and crew of the productions. As a unique item, this is a special opportunity to honor and celebrate WilliamsÕs love of his craft, his love of books, and his appreciation of the people who helped to bring his films to life. Toys was directed by Barry Levinson, starring Robin Williams with Michael Gambon, Robin Wright, Joan Cusack, LL Cool J, Donald OÕConnor, Debi Mazar, Jack Warden, and Jamie Foxx. The film tells the story of an eccentric toymaker Kenneth Zevo (OÕConnor) who bequeaths his business to his brother Leland (Gambon) who is as much out of touch with toymaking as he is with reality. KennethÕs nephew Leslie Zevo (Williams) is much better suited to the position and when he finds out that Leland starts to make weapons instead of toys, he decides to take action. Toys was nominated for 2 Oscars; Best Art Direction - Set Direction and Best Costume Design.
