Allan Barnard, H. C. Groome, E. H. Garrett, Frank Dicksee, A. W. Cooper, J. Nash, E. M. Wimperis, W. Biscombe Gardner, et al (illustrator). Beautiful Victorian gift-book edition of From Gold to Grey: Being Poems and Pictures of Life and Nature by Mrs. Mary D. Brine. Illustrated throughout with exquisite full-page wood engravings and elaborate floral border designs by noted 19th-century artists including Allan Barnard, H. C. Groome, E. H. Garrett, Frank Dicksee, A. W. Cooper, J. Nash, E. M. Wimperis, and others. Printed on heavy cream paper with decorative typography typical of Cassell's deluxe editions. Poetic subjects include "Easter Lilies," "Spring Time," "The Haymaking Girl," "John and the Squire," and "The Parting Hour," celebrating nature, rural life, and sentiment. Early ink ownership inscription on the front flyleaf reads "Henrietta M. Harmon" in fine 19th-century cursive. Gilt page edges remain bright. Moderate rubbing and wear to extremities and spine ends, corners lightly bumped, occasional mild foxing and a few binding stress points but overall tight and well-preserved. A striking example of late-Victorian book design and an excellent addition to a collection of illustrated poetry or Cassell gift books. Bright gilt pictorial cover; light rubbing to spine ends; binding solid with mild separation starting in one signature. Pages clean and unmarked; illustrations crisp and richly detailed. All edges gilt bright and intact.
