This copy is in fine unmarked condition. The dust wrapper has fared less well and has one or two small areas of loss and evidence of repair. Cover of Darkness is the humble and self effacing account of Roderick Chisholm's wartime exploits as a World War Two nightfigher pilot. Flying first Blenheims, then Beaufighters and finally the superlative Mosquito he accounted for 9 confirmed kills. He received the DSO and the DFC, but reading his account you'd never realise as he doesn't mention it. The book is very well written and he doesn't shy away from describing his feelings of self doubt and the fears that sometimes almost overwhelmed him. The very fact that he survived the war demonstrates his obvious competence as a pilot, but he pulls no punches when he openly describes his inabilities and shortcomings. If you want to learn about what it was really like to be a nightfighter pilot, about the fears involved with flying in the dark, this is the book to read. Not only does the author cover the trials and tribulations of being on active service he also describes the technological and tactical developments that took place during the war. He was heavily involved in Radio Countermeasures at the end of the war and he gives a masterly description of the struggle for supremacy between the RAF and the Luftwaffe. Ref O7.
