Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "I must be," she said. She stepped into the shed another pace or two. She was tall and lithe, with short hair. Although the light was dim, Jack could see that she was beautiful. Stunning even, like a high fashion model. "Uncle Claudie told me about you," she said. "He took a shine to you." She squatted down and looked him full in the face. "I can see why. You're a pretty man." She smiled and her teeth glowed in the dim light. "I'd rather be handsome," he grinned. He felt foolish. He was sitting on the floor of a shed on some old black man's property and a beautiful black girl was telling him he was pretty. Christ. What the hell was going on? 47 "Sometimes pretty is past handsome," she replied. "Like Elvis. Elvis was pretty, more than handsome. Paul Newman is handsome. Sidney Poitier is handsome. Billy Dee Williams is handsome. You and Elvis, y'all pretty." She laughed again. "When you put it that way it doesn't sound so bad." "No other way to put it. You hungry? Got supper done. Nice greens, side pork, cornbread." "Sounds good. And yes, I'm very hungry." "You can wash up in the house or out here at the hosepipe," she said. They went out to the faucet between the shed and the house. She went in to get him a towel. Jack pulled off his wet shirt and ran water from the old leaky rubber hose over his body. It was steaming hot to begin with, until the water heated by the sun all day ran out. Then it poured over him cold as ice. The sun was still showing on the western horizon. It was about 8:30, he guessed. She came out and handed him a big blue towel. She looked him up and down. "You got nice muscles too," she smiled. "You work out?" "I used to, but not in a long time." She was in fine shape as well. She had the body of a dancer or model-tall and willowy. She was a light coffee color with a nose like those seen on statues of Ethiopian princesses. Her eyes were just the least bit slanted, giving her an Oriental flavor. She was about as pretty as any woman he had ever seen. She was elegant, Jack decided. "You're in pretty good shape yourself," Jack said. "I used to dance." "Ballet?" "No, exotic." She laughed. "You know, with the shiny pole and high heels." Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. He saw the bear out of the corner of his eye just before it knocked him sprawling in the snow. It came around the east side of the cabin, just a few feet from him, and it came at a run. He had left his rifle and pistol inside. All he had was the knife on his belt and he went for it as the huge grizzly closed in for the kill. He saw the cloudy right eye and knew this was his bear, the one that had maimed him and the one he had blinded. Judging by it's ferocity, it remembered him too and planned to extract its pound of flesh. The bear was on top of him before he could get up, growling and swiping at him with its sharp claws, it's huge mouth gaping and filled with sharp teeth. It bit into his left arm up high and he heard the bone snap as the animal yanked it this way and that. With the knife in his right hand, he stabbed it several times in the side as hard as he could. It only seemed to infuriate the beast more and it gained a new purchase on his lower arm and broke it there, the bones grinding in the powerful jaws. Amos realized suddenly that he was screaming as loud as the bear was growling, The beast got his left shoulder in his big mouth and clamped down. He was wracked with pain and screamed out in a different note, sticking the animal time and again. He suddenly realized that the bear was going to kill him if he could not do something decisive within the next few seconds. With that, he moved the knife hand up and tried to stab it in the head, to get the brain. The point seem to penetrate the hard skull but it did not slow the beast. Feeling the last of his strength ebbing, he flipped the knife in his hand from a stabbing grip to a slashing one and struck the bear in the throat. He was rewarded by a deluge of hot blood that steamed in the freezing air and the animal seemed taken aback. It loosened the grip on his shoulder and stumbled off him, walking wobbly a few feet away, spraying a gusher of blood all the while. Amos was amazed when the animal turned back toward him and stood on his hind legs, reaching up to great height and growling loud. It then fell over on its side in the snow and jerked several times before going still. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Propped back in his chair watching the rain fall into the darkness, Floyd glanced up at Mattie's window on the second floor of the building across the street. He wondered if she was asleep, or by herself. Probably by herself, because most of the cowhands about didn't want to spent what it cost to have a woman for the whole night. And she was kind of picky, too. Just having the money wasn't enough with her sometimes. Floyd Gundersen felt his age on this rainy night. His joints ached and his heartbeat thudded in his head. He had forty-one hard years on him, a right smart for a marshal in his part of the country. He had been shot three times and he had killed nine men in his sixteen years as a lawman. All his killings-and all his wounds-had been in the line of duty, and he prided himself on the fact that he had never killed a man that didn't need killing.
