Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Patricia Davey (Dustwrapper design) (illustrator). Second Edition. No date - just a copyright date of 1947. However, this appears to be a second impression of a later printing of the book, based on the list of author's works which includes "The Fall" which was published in 1957. There is also mention of Camus winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. The book was first published in the UK by Hamish Hamilton and in the USA by New Directions, New York - both in 1947, and originally in French as "Le Malentendu suivi de Caligula" in 1944 by Gallimard. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt remains bright. Top edge of page block slightly darkened, with a small stain which doesn't affect the interior pages. Top and tail of spine just slightly creased. Top corners slightly creased. Boards clean with just a small mark at the top of the back board. Internally very good also with no inscriptions. Pages clean. No internal foxing. Very slight spine lean but spine tight. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of 10s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper states 'Second impression'. The dustwrapper is complete, with just slight edge wear and creasing. No tears. No chips. The dustwrapper is very clean, and even the spine is unfaded. ***190mm x130mm. 168 pages. ***'In the tyranny of Caligula, maddest and most fantastic of Roman Emperors, Albert Camus finds a supreme logic. Who is better fitted than the most powerful autocrat in the world to attempt to realize the Great Ideal --to achieve the impossible, to "fetch the moon home"?' For all his seemingly senseless cruelties, Caligula is not an unsympathetic character. He can win loyalty from people who have the best reason for hating him. In advance he senses and understands the plots of the cowardly conspirators around him. And ironically he goads them on. This is a play about a strange experiment, ruthlessly carried out, with human life no object. In "Cross Purpose", mother and daughter in a country inn plot to murder and rob their guest. Surprise and tragedy await them when they find out who he is. ***These two plays are the major stage works of a writer whose reputation as playwright, philosopher and novelist has now won him the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1957. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A nice period copy of the UK edition of Camus's two plays 'Caligula' and 'Cross Purpose' - of interest to collectors of the work of Albert Camus, and twentieth century drama. The dustwrapper is extremely thin, and copies in such well-preserved condition are hard to come by now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
