Une dizaine de cités avaient été créées à l'époque romaine. Seules quelques-unes d'entre elles subsistent réellement durant le haut Moyen Age: Rouen, Bayeux, Evreux et Lisieux. Au IXe siècle ces agglomérations sont durement frappées par les invasions scandinaves et par leurs conséquences économiques. C'est alors qu'on assiste, au cours du Xle siècle, à un extraordinaire mouvement de renaissance urbaine. De nombreuses villes apparaissent alors, dont la plus importante est celle de Caen. Le nom de Normands évoque les " hommes du Nord ", rappelant l'origine d'une partie de la population du duché. Pourtant il n'y a pas de continuité entre les raids vikings et les entreprises normandes en Angleterre et en Méditerranée. Il s'écoule presque un siècle entre la fondation de la Normandie par Rollon (911) et les premières expéditions en Espagne ou en Italie du Sud (1000-1040). L'épopée des Normands commence par l'intégration des Vikings dans le territoire de la Normandie et se poursuit par la conquête de l'Italie du Sud et de la Sicile.
